Together with various taxonomists and systematic biologists from different parts of the Philippines and Asia, Mindanao State University at Naawan – College of Marine and Allied Sciences (MSUN-CMAS) faculty member Dr. Nonillon M. Aspe and student Ms. Kyrene Angel S. Magsayo attended and presented in the recently concluded International Symposium and 41st Annual Meeting (ISAM) organized by the Association of Systematic Biologists of the Philippines (ASBP).

With the theme, โ€œFrontiers in Systematics: Innovations and Emerging Technologies in Exploring Biodiversityโ€, the symposium took place at Northwestern University, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte from May 29-31, 2024.

Dr. Aspe presented their study titled, โ€œUtilizing eDNA Metabarcoding for Assessing Mangrove-Associated Fish Biodiversity in Select Bioregions of the Philippinesโ€. This is a collaborative output of the eDNA metabarcoding project headed by Dr. Venus E. Leopardas and funded by the Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD).

Together with Dr. Aspe as her thesis adviser, Ms. Magsayo, a 4th-year Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology student, presented their research study titled, โ€œTaxonomy of Sipuncula in Selected Site in Murcielagos Bay, Northern Mindanao, Philippinesโ€.

This event facilitated discussions among scientists, taxonomists, and researchers from various universities in the Philippines and other countries, fostering the exchange of ideas and advancements in biodiversity exploration.
