Small-scale fisheries (SSF) play a critical role in food security, cultural identity, and coastal economies across the Philippines. In Northern Mindanao, SSFs support thousands of
livelihoods and contribute to ecosystem stewardship through generational knowledge and community-based management. However, SSFs remain underrepresented in policy,
research, and development initiatives, particularly in the regions outside major urban and research centers.
Too Big To Ignore (TBTI) is a global research and knowledge mobilization network dedicated to elevating the visibility, viability, and sustainability of SSFs. Through its country
hubs, TBTI strengthens local capacities, builds transdisciplinary partnerships, and supports inclusive and context-based solutions to fisheries challenges.
As an active member of TBTI Philippines, Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSU at Naawan) proposes to establish a TBTI Northern Mindanao Hub. This regional hub will
serve as a platform for coordinating SSF-related research, extension, community engagement, and policy advocacy across coastal and inland fishery systems of Northern
Mindanao.
