Mindanao State University (MSU) took center stage in the 5th International Conference on Environment and Forest Conservation, co-hosting the prestigious event held from December 5 to 7, 2024, at Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB University), Indonesia. This significant gathering of global leaders, experts, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners was united under the theme, “Forest Conservation in the Anthropocene: Adapting and Mitigating to New Environmental Resilience.” The event aimed to tackle the pressing challenges and propose innovative solutions for conserving forests in the face of escalating environmental changes. Representing the MSU System was a delegation led by University President, Atty. Basari D. Mapupuno. Delegates hailed from various campuses, including Marawi, Maguindanao, Naawan, and Buug, emphasizing the university’s dedication to interdisciplinary collaboration and global engagement. The MSU Naawan campus was ably represented by Director Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan, Forestry Chairperson Dr. Edgar D. Castañares, CAFES faculty Sherley Ann T. Inocente, and Darlene M. Reble. Their participation not only amplified the university’s role in global environmental discourse but also showcased groundbreaking research contributions to the international community. Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan, a recognized authority on microplastics research, delivered an impactful talk on the second day of the conference. His presentation provided an in-depth analysis of this emerging pollutant, the microplastics. Dr. Capangpangan’s talk highlighted the grave implications of microplastics on marine ecosystems, human health, and global food security, emphasizing the urgent need for collaborative mitigation strategies. Dr. Edgar D. Castañares, Chairperson of the Forestry Department, presented his study titled “Elliptic Fourier Analysis of Two Threatened 𝘈𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘓𝘢𝘮. (𝘛𝘩𝘺𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘢𝘦) and Its Associated Flora in Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary (MHRWS), Davao Oriental, Philippines.” His research provided critical insights into the conservation of these endangered species within the UNESCO World Heritage Site, emphasizing the need for sustained protection and biodiversity monitoring. Ms. Sherley Ann T. Inocente brought to light the critical pathway of land-based plastic debris into marine environments with her presentation, “A pathway of land-based plastic debris into the marine environment: The status of Cagayan de Oro River.” Her work highlighted the growing menace of plastic pollution and its downstream impacts, offering valuable perspectives on community-driven solutions. Meanwhile, Ms. Darlene M. Reble presented her pioneering research titled “The Prevalence of Microplastics in Farmed Seaweed 𝘒𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘷𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘻𝘪𝘪 in Panguil Bay, Philippines.” Her findings revealed alarming levels of microplastics contamination in farmed seaweed, shedding light on its potential implications for aquaculture industries and coastal communities. The conference provided an exceptional platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together minds from across the globe to discuss sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, and the broader challenges of environmental resilience in the Anthropocene epoch. MSU’s active involvement not only highlighted its research excellence but also reaffirmed its commitment to addressing critical global issues. Atty. Basari D. Faculty-researchers from the College of Education and Social Sciences (CESS) and the MSU at Naawan-Integrated Development School (MSUN-IDS) participated in the 15th Asian Conference on Education (ACE2024) held from November 25 to 29, 2024, at the Toshi Center in Tokyo, Japan. Organized in partnership with the IAFOR Research Centre at the Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP) of Osaka University, the event brought together academics and scholars from around the world to exchange ideas, foster collaboration, and promote advancements in education. Three MSUN researchers presented their groundbreaking studies during the conference. Mr. Leemarc C. Alia of CESS shared his research titled “Correlating Biophysics Anxiety and Performance Among Biology Students,” which explored the link between student anxiety in biophysics and academic outcomes. His work, co-authored with faculty from Central Mindanao University and Cebu Normal University, highlighted a critical aspect of student performance in the sciences. Meanwhile, Ms. Baby Eve N. Asequia, also from CESS, presented her study on the “Development and Evaluation of a Re-Sequenced Intervention Module (RIM).” This collaborative effort with colleagues from her college focused on enhancing instructional strategies to improve learning outcomes. From MSUN-IDS, Mr. Kevin Client B. Matutes discussed his research titled “Sleep Routine Among Grade 10 Learners in the Science Curriculum: Its Influence on Academic Performance in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.” This study, co-authored with MSUN-IDS students and faculty, examined the impact of sleep patterns on academic performance in science subjects. Participation in ACE2024 highlights MSUN’s commitment to academic excellence and global collaboration. The conference provided an excellent platform for MSUN researchers to share their work with an international audience, build networks, and explore potential partnerships across disciplines and borders. Their contributions not only showcased the university’s innovative approach to addressing challenges in education but also demonstrated its significant role in fostering research that benefits learners and educators alike. In high spirits of preparation, Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN), through its Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM) led by Assoc. Prof. Desheree Judena G. Preciado, launched its much-anticipated “KaPEACEtahan sa MSU at Naawan: Tabo sa Umahan” on November 29, 2024. The event, themed “Cultivating Peace in Farming Communities Towards Sustainable Agriculture,” signaled the start of MSUN’s week-long celebration of its 51st Founding Anniversary and the Mindanao Week of Peace. With its primary goal to provide local farmers with a venue to showcase their fresh, organic farm products, emphasizing sustainable agricultural practices and environmental conservation, the Tabo sa Umahan will continue until December 4, 2024, offering the community opportunities to support local farming initiatives while promoting ecological stewardship. The opening ceremony was graced by distinguished guests, including a delegation from Timor Leste comprising Mr. Joao Francisco Maia, International Affairs Director of UN Paz; Ms. Juvita Pereira Faria, local expert and advisor for curriculum development; Ms. Marcelina da Conceicao, Peace Hub Coordinator; UN Paz, Joaninho Xavier Hei – Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, UN Paz and Vicente Borges Maia from Centro Nacional Chega. They were joined by MSU-IIT delegates from the Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao and the MSU-IIT Youth Chain of Peace (MYCoP). Local dignitaries, including Naawan Vice Mayor Hon. MSU at Naawan Faculty-Researchers Present at CE-SAIN SEARCA Joint International Conference 2024

Faculty members from Mindanao State University at Naawan showcased their research at the CE-SAIN SEARCA Joint International Conference 2024, held from November 19 to 22, 2024. The event, jointly organized by the Center of Excellence on Sustainable Agricultural Intensification and Nutrition (CE-SAIN) and the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), brought together global experts in sustainable agriculture, nutrition, and biodiversity. The conference, which combined the Fourth International Conference on Sustainable Agricultural Intensification and Nutrition (SAIN4) and the Third School-Plus-Home Gardens cum Biodiversity Enhancement and Enterprise (SHGBEE3), aimed to foster collaboration and innovation in addressing the challenges of sustainability in agriculture. Participants engaged in keynote speeches, plenary and parallel sessions, poster and oral presentations, and mobile workshops at agricultural technology parks, farms, and conservation areas in Angkor Wat. Among the esteemed presenters were MSU at Naawan’s Ms. Jolibe B. Llido, an Instructor, and Associate Prof. Mechie Ann S. Clar-Florida, a faculty member and Project Leader of the Mytella project under DOST PCAARRD. Ms. Llido presented her research titled “Nitrogen Nutrition Changes Rhizosphere pH and Affects Above and Belowground Attributes of Rice Genotypes.” Her study highlighted how nitrogen dynamics in the rhizosphere influence crop performance, providing insights into optimizing rice production sustainably. While Associate Prof. Clar-Florida presented a study on “Production Performance and Cost-Benefit Analysis of Broiler Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus L.) Fed with Different Levels of Mussel (Mytella strigata Hanley) Meal as Replacement to Fishmeal.” Her findings offered a sustainable alternative to traditional fishmeal in poultry production, aligning with the conference’s focus on sustainable practices and resource efficiency. The conference attracted participants from countries including the Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, China, Thailand, and the United States. MSUN Delegates participated in the 12th International Fisheries Symposium 2024 in Hakodate, Japan

A team of esteemed delegates from Mindanao State University at Naawan, led by Chancellor Dr. Elnor C. Roa proudly represented the university at the 12th International Fisheries Symposium 2024 (IFS2024) held on November 19–22, 2024, at the Hakodate Citizen Hall and Hakodate Arena, Japan. Joining Chancellor Roa were key university officials and faculty, including Dr. Ruby C. Gonzales, Director for Research; Dr. Rey Y. Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan Represents MSU at Naawan in BKCF Capacity Building Workshop

Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan, Director of the Office of International Affairs and Linkages at Mindanao State University at Naawan, and Project Leader of a BIMP-EAGA-Republic of Korea Cooperation Fund (BKCF)-funded project, actively participated in the BKCF Capacity Building Workshop for Project Monitoring and Evaluation. This workshop, fully funded by BKCF, aimed to equip project implementers with essential skills in research implementation, reporting, and monitoring and evaluation processes. Organized by BKCF, a Korean agency dedicated to fostering inclusive and balanced growth in Southeast Asia while contributing to ASEAN connectivity, the event brought together project leaders and delegates from across the region. MSU at Naawan’s project, one of only nine successful proposals out of 213 submissions during the 4th BKCF Call, focuses on developing mitigation strategies and policy formulation to address the emerging threats of microplastic pollution in the Philippine EAGA region. Dr. Capangpangan joined other Philippine delegates in the workshop and had the opportunity to present the project during the culmination program, showcasing the university’s commitment to addressing critical environmental challenges. On November 6-8, 2024, a delegation from Mindanao State University at Naawan, led by Chancellor Dr. Elnor C. Roa, attended the East Asian Seas (EAS) Congress 2024 held at the Xiamen International Conference Center Hotel in Xiamen, China. This year’s event, organized by Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) and was co-hosted by the China’s Ministry of Natural Resources and the Xiamen Municipal Government, was themed “Blue Synergy for a Shared Future: One Sustainable and Resilient Ocean” in collaboration with the annual World Ocean Week. Joining Chancellor Roa were MSUN’s Research Director, Dr. Ruby C. Gonzales, and Extension Director, Prof. Mariefe B. Quiñones. The Congress served as a platform for reviewing and mapping future strategies for the Sustainable Development Strategy for the Seas of East Asia (SDS-SEA). Discussions emphasized collaborative efforts among governments, organizations, and communities to promote sustainable and resilient ocean management. Highlight of their trip was when the delegation participated in the PEMSEA Network of Learning Centers (PNLC) and PEMSEA Network of Local Governments (PNLG) Joint Forum, which included the PNLC General Assembly. On November 6-7, 2024, delegates from Mindanao State University at Naawan, including Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan, Director for International Affairs and Linkages and Dr. Fernand F. MSUN Faculty Researchers Present Papers at 17th International Kuroshio Science Symposium in Japan

MSU at Naawan faculty researchers recently showcased their work at the 17th International Kuroshio Science Symposium, held at Kochi University’s Asakura Campus in Japan from November 4-6, 2024. The symposium, themed “Marine Resources Nurtured by the Biological and Environmental Diversity of the Kuroshio Region: Collaborative Research for Innovation in Elucidation, Utilization, and Management,” brought together researchers from countries to discuss innovative research and sustainable approaches to understanding and managing the Kuroshio region’s marine biodiversity. Among the delegates, Dr. Anabelle Dece A. Espadero, Ms. Lovella R. Calala, and Mr. Ramon Francisco Q. Padilla represented MSUN, presenting studies focused on coastal and marine resource management. Dr. Espadero’s presentation, titled “Developing a Coastal Resource and Environment Mapping Protocol using Drone Survey-QGIS-Photogrammetry Applications,” highlighted a new protocol for using drones, QGIS software, and photogrammetry techniques to map coastal resources. Her innovative approach aims to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of coastal resource assessments, supporting sustainable management efforts in coastal regions. Ms. Calala’s study, “Marine Macrophyte Assessment in Claver, Surigao del Norte, Philippines,” explored the status and diversity of marine macrophytes in Claver. Her findings provide crucial insights into marine vegetation, which plays a vital role in coastal ecosystem health and resilience. Lastly, Mr. Padilla presented his paper, “Macrofaunal Assemblage and Habitat Conditions of River Systems in Claver, Surigao del Norte, Philippines.” His research focused on the diversity and habitat conditions of river systems in Claver, providing essential data on macrofaunal assemblages to inform future conservation strategies.  Aside from presenting their research, the faculty members participated in engaging field activities organized by the symposium. Dr. Espadero joined a benthic sampling activity in Tosa Bay, Kochi Prefecture, where she collaborated with local experts to examine and analyze benthic communities and seabed conditions. Ms. Calala and Mr. Padilla, meanwhile, embarked on an excursion to the renowned Ryuga-do Limestone Cave, one of Japan’s three largest limestone caves. The half-day tour allowed them to explore the unique limestone formations and learn about cave organisms and ongoing stalactite dating research conducted by Kochi University. The Ryuga-do Cave, spanning approximately 4,000 meters, offers visitors a glimpse into historical and ecological wonders, including remnants of ancient human activity dating back 2,000 years. MSU at Naawan Hosts Seminar on Sea Cucumber Fisheries, Highlights Emerging Industry and Sustainable Practices

On October 29, 2024, the Extension Division of Mindanao State University at Naawan hosted a seminar on taxonomy, socioeconomics, and advancements in sea cucumber fisheries at the Sea Cucumber Museum. The event brought together experts and stakeholders to explore the potential of sea cucumber farming as a growing industry, offering valuable insights into both its economic and ecological impact. Key presentations included Ms. Marnelle B. Sornito’s discussion on the taxonomy and identification of sea cucumber species, emphasizing those with high commercial value. This session provided participants, including fisheries technicians and members of coastal communities, with a deeper understanding of the different species of sea cucumber, critical for improving fisheries management and trade. Dr. Elgen M. Arriesgado followed with an overview of the current state of sea cucumber fisheries in Mindanao, outlining trade dynamics and market trends. Her presentation set the stage for further discussions on the sustainable development of the industry. Innovative approaches to hatchery production were highlighted by Mr. Jomar F. Besoña, who presented on the white-teatfish Holothuria fuscogilva, detailing new methods and protocols for hatchery production. Similarly, Ms. Hanzel M. Honghong discussed the spawning and larval rearing of sandfish Holothuria scabra, offering key insights into the early stages of sea cucumber cultivation. Dr. Wilfredo H. Uy presented advancements in ocean nursery systems and grow-out methods, sharing innovative techniques such as sea ranching to enhance sea cucumber culture. Additionally, Ms. Darlene M. Reble discussed post-harvest techniques, emphasizing the importance of proper harvesting, processing, and marketing to ensure product quality and maximize economic returns. The seminar also spotlighted an ongoing project spearheaded by MSU-Buug and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Central Office. The project, which focuses on the coastal communities of Payao, aims to incentivize habitat restoration and wealth creation through sea cucumber cultivation. By providing sustainable livelihoods and contributing to marine ecosystem health, this initiative is seen as a potential game-changer for coastal development. To support this effort, MSU-Buug has requested a seminar from MSU at Naawan to equip their team with skills in sea cucumber identification, rearing, and nursery management. The seminar was attended by participants from The Coalition of Municipal Fisherfolk Associations (COMFAS) including members from Kapunungan sa Gagmayng Mangingisda in Concepcion and Payao Fisherfolk Association, as well as faculty from MSU-Buug and personnel from the BFAR Central Office. The collaborative approach highlighted in the seminar, which integrates scientific expertise, community engagement, and sustainable aquaculture practices, promises economic benefits for coastal communities while contributing to the conservation of sea cucumber species. This seminar marks the beginning of what could be a transformative partnership in the region, blending economic development with environmental stewardship.
