Mindanao State University at Naawan

Strengthening Research Resilience through Risk Management Training

Two faculty members from the College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (CFMS) of Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN), Assistant Professor Lovella R. Calala and Mr. Erwin Jones A. Tucong, actively participated in the training-workshop on “Risk Management of R&D Project Implementation,” held on August 12–15, 2025, at the Technopark Hotel in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna.

Organized by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) through its Institute Development Division (IDD), the training was designed to equip participants with the skills to identify potential risks in project implementation, develop effective strategies for managing these risks, and create a comprehensive risk management plan that ensures smoother execution of research projects.

The MSUN delegates contributed to the sessions by presenting their project on seagrass-associated fungal endophytes, which highlighted the university’s expertise in marine science research and demonstrated its commitment to advancing innovative studies that address pressing ecological and environmental concerns. Through collaborative discussions and case-based learning activities, participants also gained practical knowledge on anticipating risks, designing preventive measures, and preparing for unexpected challenges in research projects.

One of the significant outcomes of the workshop was the development of a Re-Entry Action Plan (REAP), which serves as a roadmap outlining possible risks and corresponding responses that can be applied to actual projects. The plan further emphasized the integration of monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of research initiatives.

This training underscores MSU at Naawan’s commitment to enhancing research capabilities and project management among its faculty, fostering resilience in project implementation, and contributing to the continuous growth of scientific knowledge and innovation in the country.
