MSUN Represents in Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management Training

A total of twenty-five (25) participants from fifteen (15) State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across nine (9) regions in the Philippines successfully completed the Training Course on the Essential Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) held on August 26–29, 2025, at Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo, Iloilo City.
The training was organized by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) Marine Resources Research Division, in partnership with the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV). It served as a vital platform to strengthen participants’ knowledge and skills in applying the ecosystem approach—a holistic and sustainable framework for fisheries management that integrates ecological, social, and governance dimensions.
Leading the discussions and workshops were Dr. Romeo Cabungcal, who served as the Lead Resource Person, and Dr. Floredel Galon, the Co-Lead Resource Person. Their expertise provided participants with valuable insights into the challenges and strategies of advancing responsible fisheries governance.
Representing Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN) were Ms. Marnelle Sornito and Ms. Honielyn Taka, who actively engaged in the sessions and collaborative group activities. Their participation underscores MSUN’s strong commitment to promoting sustainable fisheries and protecting aquatic ecosystems.
Through this training, SUCs and HEIs reaffirmed their collective responsibility to advance research-based, science-driven, and community-centered approaches to fisheries management—paving the way for ecological balance, resource sustainability, and improved livelihoods for fishing communities.
