Collaborative Academic Visit of Dr. Satoshi Kubota from Kochi University, Japan

The visit of Dr. Satoshi Kubota, a distinguished professor from the Department of Marine Resource Science and Head of the Kuroshio Science Unit at Kochi University, Japan, to Mindanao State University at Naawan, which took place from December 14 to 17, 2025, served as a strategic step toward strengthening international academic and research collaboration in the marine and fisheries sciences.
Dr. Kubota’s leadership in the Kuroshio Science Unit, a globally recognized center for studies on the Kuroshio Current, marine ecosystems, and climate, ocean interactions, aligned closely with MSUN’s research priorities under its RIIDE Agenda, particularly in marine biodiversity, aquaculture innovation, and climate-resilient coastal livelihoods. His visit provided an opportunity for both institutions to explore joint research initiatives, co-advised graduate student programs, capacity-building activities, and potential faculty and student mobility.
As part of the engagement, Dr. Kubota participated in a site visit to Balingoan, Misamis Oriental, which included a diving activity at a designated diving site. This activity allowed him to conduct first-hand observation of local marine ecosystems.
In addition, Dr. Kubota delivered a talk entitled “Creating Pathways for Student and Faculty Mobility in Kuroshio and Marine Science Research.” The presentation highlighted international academic exchange programs, including the MEXT scholarship, and showcased opportunities for collaborative research. It fostered meaningful dialogue among faculty members, researchers, and students, while reinforcing MSUN’s commitment to strengthening and expanding its global academic partnerships.

This engagement built on the initial discussions during the Kuroshio Symposium and supported MSUN’s commitment to strengthening its international partnerships. Dr. Kubota’s presence on campus enabled in-depth dialogue on establishing a formal collaboration between MSU Naawan and Kochi University, potentially leading to shared research projects, laboratory exchanges, and long-term academic linkages that will benefit both institutions.
Overall, the visit marked a significant milestone in MSUN’s efforts to enhance global engagement, promote faculty and student mobility, advance interdisciplinary marine research, and contribute to sustainable development in the region through science-based collaboration.
