𝐌𝐒𝐔𝐍 𝐀𝐓𝐁𝐈 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐞-𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐮𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐏, 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠
Building on the momentum of the first day (February 26, 2025), the second and final day of the MSUN ATBI Pre-Incubation Training on February 27, 2025, focused on strengthening incubatees’ grasp of important business and related concepts. The sessions provided them with the knowledge to secure, develop, and confidently present their agri-aqua ventures. The training continued at the Extension Division Office Audio-Visual Room, Mindanao State University at Naawan. The day commenced with “Module V: Intellectual Property Rights and Protection for Startups,” led by Prof. Karem A. Palmes, Project Leader of MSUN ATBI. This session emphasized the importance of safeguarding innovation, and guiding incubatees through various IP protection strategies intended for startups. Participants gained insights into patents, trademarks, copyrights, and how securing their ideas can strengthen their competitive edge in the market. Next, “Module VI: Navigating Business Registration, Compliance, and Risk Management” was conducted by Dr. Manolito E. Parungao, Project Staff Level II, MSUN ATBI. The module provided an overview of legal essentials for startups, including business registration procedures, compliance requirements, and risk mitigation strategies. The session stressed the importance of complying with legal requirements to ensure smooth operations and long-term business sustainability. In the afternoon, the focus shifted to communication and business modeling with “Module VII: Mastering Pitching, Presentation Skills, and Startup Storytelling,” facilitated by Gaily Jubie S. Hontiveros, Project Staff Level I, MSUN ATBI. This interactive workshop equipped incubatees with skills in crafting compelling pitches, improving presentations, and using storytelling to convey their startup vision. A hands-on workshop lets participants apply their learning in real-time. Concluding the training, “Module VIII: Exploring the Business Model Canvas and Strategies,” led by Christian Fel S. Batoctoy, Collaborator (MSUN ATBI) and Faculty at the College of Environment and Life Sciences, provided incubatees with the approach to business planning. This session introduced the Business Model Canvas, a tool for developing sustainable business models, followed by a Workshop. The training ended with an awarding ceremony, celebrating the efforts of the newly onboarded incubatees. Following the official approval of the Cacao Processing Center for Western Misamis Oriental under the Shared Service Facility (SSF) Program of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), a meeting was held at Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN) on February 25, 2025, to discuss the key aspects of the project. The meeting was attended by MSUN Chancellor Dr. Elnor C. Roa, DARES Center Director Dr. Aida D. Perpetua, and MSUN faculty members Assoc. Prof. Mariefe B. Quiñones, Asst. Prof. Karem A. Palmes, and Asst. Prof. Christian Fel Batoctoy. The DTI delegation was led by Officer-in-Charge Provincial Director Ms. Jesse Abear, accompanied by Ms. Judy Aclan-Tangkihay and Mr. Ronald L. Legaspi. As the project moves into its preparatory stage, the meeting focused on several critical aspects, including the project’s core objectives, expected outcomes, and the financial requirements needed for successful implementation. Additionally, they also discussed the organizational and management structure of the project, ensuring that all roles and responsibilities are clearly outlined for a seamless and effective execution. This collaboration between MSUN and DTI marks a significant step forward in promoting local cacao production, processing, and industry development. It demonstrates the strong partnership between the university and the government in fostering sustainable development, innovation, and local entrepreneurship, as well as creating opportunities for economic growth in Western Misamis Oriental. Ultimately, the cacao processing center promises to not only enhance the local agricultural sector but also empower the community by providing valuable training, improving livelihoods, and expanding market access for local cacao farmers. Mindanao State University at Naawan takes pride in its growing contributions to sustainable development through research, while remaining mindful of the challenges and opportunities ahead. With 212 Scopus-indexed publications, MSUN actively engages in addressing critical global issues such as poverty, climate change, biodiversity conservation, and economic growth. The university’s research efforts strongly align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water), where 46 publications highlight its expertise in marine and aquatic sciences. Additionally, MSUN’s commitment to collaboration is evident in SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), leading with 53 publications that underscore the value of academic and institutional linkages in fostering sustainable development. Beyond these areas, MSUN contributes to a range of SDGs, including SDG 15 (Life on Land) with 18 publications, SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) with 14 each, and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) with 13. These research efforts reflect the university’s dedication to addressing environmental and socio-economic challenges while supporting national and global sustainability goals. The breadth of MSUN’s research spans multiple disciplines, with a strong foundation in Agricultural and Biological Sciences (27.5%), followed by Environmental Science (16.7%), Engineering (7.1%), and Earth and Planetary Sciences (5.6%). Other fields, including Biochemistry, Genetics, Chemical Engineering, and Computer Science, further enrich its research landscape. While these achievements are encouraging, they also serve as a challenge for faculty researchers to continue expanding the university’s research impact, both in terms of publication output and alignment with the full spectrum of SDGs. Moving forward, MSUN remains committed to fostering interdisciplinary research, strengthening collaborations, and sharing knowledge that contributes to meaningful change.
