MSU at Naawan Graduate Students Join H2O Summer Course 2025 in Indonesia

From July 21 to 31, 2025, graduate students from Mindanao State University at Naawan represented the Philippines at the Highland to Ocean (H2O) Summer Course 2025, an 11-day international program hosted by IPB University in Indonesia. Ms. Marienel A. Laguit, Mr. Alberto A. Barroa II, Ms. Mary Dafeoudelle Jude L. Pagapular, Ms. Berna Louise P. Tabora, Mr. John Carlo L. Garcia, and Mr. Alahden A. Baigan joined participants from across Southeast Asia in a dynamic mix of expert-led lectures, immersive field activities, and cultural exchanges, all centered on the conservation of aquatic and marine ecosystems. The course began in Bogor with lectures on groundwater ecology, marine invertebrates, and coral biodiversity, followed by a visit to the IPB Museum and opportunities to connect with fellow participants. On the third day, the delegation visited Purwakarta Regency’s Cirata Dam and floating solar power plant to learn about Indonesia’s renewable energy initiatives, and even took part in a riparian tree planting activity. The program’s hybrid learning approach allowed for both academic depth and recovery time, with online and in-person sessions covering topics such as antimicrobial resistance, mangrove carbon cycling, marine chemical ecology, and aquatic bioindicators. Students later applied these lessons during fieldwork in Cianjur’s Cibodas Botanical Garden and nearby mountain streams. One of the program’s highlights was the field immersion in Ujung Genteng, where participants engaged in coral transplantation, intertidal and sandy shore biodiversity surveys, and coastal socio-ecology studies. The visit also featured a memorable cultural exchange, with Filipino students introducing “swaki” (sea urchin) to their peers. On July 28, the group visited the Pangumbahan Beach Turtle Conservation Center, where they experienced the rare and moving opportunity to release marine turtle hatchlings into the Indian Ocean. The final fieldwork day took them to Ciletuh Mandrajaya for mangrove planting and biodiversity assessments with the local community, underscoring the link between ecological restoration and community livelihood. The program concluded with research presentations, a lively Cultural Exchange Night, and a heartfelt closing ceremony at IPB University, marking not only the end of the course but also the strengthening of international friendships and scientific collaboration. In a joint reflection, the MSU at Naawan graduate students described the H2O Summer Course as “transformative,” citing both the hands-on scientific experiences and the lasting bonds formed with fellow participants. “We return home with new skills, knowledge, and a renewed commitment to protect aquatic and marine ecosystems,” they shared. From mountain streams to coral reefs and mangrove forests, the MSU at Naawan representatives immersed themselves in learning and action, carrying the university’s name across Southeast Asia as advocates for environmental stewardship and collaboration.

MSUN faculty researchers presented at the 5th ICMMBT at Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Mindanao State University at Naawan proudly marked its presence on the global stage as three of its faculty researchers presented their work at the 5th International Conference on Integrated Coastal Management and Marine Biotechnology 2025, held on July 30–31, 2025, at the Royal Ambarruko Hotel in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Themed “Blue Food Nexus: Harnessing Solutions for Global Food Security and Ocean Health,” this year’s ICMMBT conference focuses on promoting creative solutions and practical approaches to coastal and ocean management. The event highlighted the critical role of blue food systems in addressing global food security while ensuring the health of oceans and coastal ecosystems, directly aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Representing MSU at Naawan were Dr. Fernan Q. Abragan, Ms. Ruth T. Manco, and Mr. Kean Roe F. Mazo, who shared findings from their research in various coastal communities in the Philippines: Their participation is a testament to MSUN’s pursuit of research that tackles pressing environmental and societal challenges. By contributing to international discussions on coastal sustainability and innovation, the university affirms its role in bridging scientific knowledge with community needs. This engagement also highlights MSUN’s growing presence in global research networks and its dedication to developing solutions that are both locally meaningful and globally relevant.

Environmental DNA Research from MSU at Naawan Presented at 49th Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) Congress

From July 5 to 10, 2025, Ms. Jessah P. Trillo, DOST-SEI CIP Graduate Research Fellow from the Mindanao State University at Naawan (Environmental DNA Research and Development Center), participated and represented the Philippines at the 49th Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) Congress held at the Istanbul Lütfi Kırdar Congress Centre, Türkiye.  Ms. Trillo presented the project poster paper entitled “Harnessing Environmental DNA Metabarcoding for Biomonitoring Mangrove-Associated Fish Diversity and Structure in Select Philippine Bioregions”. This study utilizes environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding as a non-invasive and highly sensitive approach to monitor biodiversity in ecologically significant mangrove ecosystems across Philippine bioregions. By generating baseline data on fish diversity and community structure, the study contributes vital insights for coastal conservation, sustainable fisheries management, and climate adaptation strategies, especially in the face of habitat degradation and biodiversity loss. This core scientific gathering is designed to promote cutting-edge scientific exchange in the molecular life sciences. It brings together early-career researchers and seasoned experts to share the latest breakthroughs across disciplines such as molecular diagnostics and biotechnology, therapeutics, and marine biology. Furthermore, it comprises inspiring plenary lectures from distinguished researchers working in areas of high topical interest, and a range of themed symposia providing focused updates from leading experts in each field.  Altogether FEBS Congresses aim to be an exemplary cross-discipline gathering in the molecular life sciences for research presentation, discussion, learning, inspiration and encouragement, with participants leaving with new research knowledge and ideas, and perhaps the beginnings of international collaborations and friendships.
