MSUN’s SAPNAY program strengthens students’ competencies in English, Mathematics, and Science

Aiming to strengthen learners’ competencies in English, Mathematics, and Science, Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN), through the College of Education and Social Sciences (CESS), continues to advance its commitment to quality education through the SAPNAY Program—Strengthening the Academic Performance and Nurturing the Abilities of the Youth.
Spearheaded by Dr. Arlene Castillo, the program leader from CESS, SAPNAY aims to improve the learning competencies of students in English, Mathematics, and Science over a five-year implementation period. Each year is designed with specific objectives and a variety of learning activities that cater to the developmental needs of the same group of learners as they advance to higher grade levels.
For its 2024 cycle, the program focuses on Grade 7 students of Lubilan Integrated School in Lubilan, Naawan, Misamis Oriental—one of the municipality’s far-flung schools. The lessons used in the interventions are drawn from the 3rd and 4th quarter Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) of the Department of Education, ensuring alignment with national curriculum standards.
The SAPNAY Program follows a structured process beginning with a pre-assessment to determine each student’s competency level, followed by a series of targeted learning interventions designed to enhance their academic skills. After implementation, a post-assessment is conducted to evaluate progress, culminating in a feedback and recognition program that celebrates both learners’ achievements and the educators’ efforts.
This year’s SAPNAY Culmination Program was held on October 16, 2024, marking another milestone in MSUN’s commitment to quality and inclusive education. The initiative not only addresses learning gaps but also contributes to the fulfillment of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) of UNESCO, reaffirming the university’s role as a catalyst for educational transformation in the community.
Through SAPNAY, MSU at Naawan continues to empower young learners—particularly those in remote areas—by nurturing their academic abilities and supporting their journey toward holistic growth and lifelong learning.
