𝐌𝐒𝐔𝐍 𝐒𝐃𝐆 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐬 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬

Mindanao State University at Naawan takes pride in its growing contributions to sustainable development through research, while remaining mindful of the challenges and opportunities ahead. With 212 Scopus-indexed publications, MSUN actively engages in addressing critical global issues such as poverty, climate change, biodiversity conservation, and economic growth. The university’s research efforts strongly align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water), where 46 publications highlight its expertise in marine and aquatic sciences. Additionally, MSUN’s commitment to collaboration is evident in SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), leading with 53 publications that underscore the value of academic and institutional linkages in fostering sustainable development. Beyond these areas, MSUN contributes to a range of SDGs, including SDG 15 (Life on Land) with 18 publications, SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) with 14 each, and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) with 13. These research efforts reflect the university’s dedication to addressing environmental and socio-economic challenges while supporting national and global sustainability goals. The breadth of MSUN’s research spans multiple disciplines, with a strong foundation in Agricultural and Biological Sciences (27.5%), followed by Environmental Science (16.7%), Engineering (7.1%), and Earth and Planetary Sciences (5.6%). Other fields, including Biochemistry, Genetics, Chemical Engineering, and Computer Science, further enrich its research landscape. While these achievements are encouraging, they also serve as a challenge for faculty researchers to continue expanding the university’s research impact, both in terms of publication output and alignment with the full spectrum of SDGs. Moving forward, MSUN remains committed to fostering interdisciplinary research, strengthening collaborations, and sharing knowledge that contributes to meaningful change. As a key institution supporting the Regional Agri-Aqua Innovation System Enhancement (RAISE) in Northern Mindanao, Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN) actively participated in the RAISE Summit 2025, held at Central Mindanao University in Bukidnon on January 21-22, 2025. The MSUN delegation, led by Chancellor Dr. Elnor C. Roa, included Research and Innovation Institute Director Dr. Anabelle Dece A. Espadero, the Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management (IPTBM) team headed by Assoc. Prof. Floremie B. Apdian, Intellectual Property Rights Office Coordinator Asst. Prof. Dainna Recel Pamisa, the MSUN-Agri-Aqua Technology Business Incubator (ATBI) team under Asst. Prof. Karem A. Palmes, College of Business Administration and Accountancy faculty members Asst. Prof. Stephen Magoncia and Dr. Manolito Parungao, and Manager of School of Marine Fisheries and Technology Fish Processing Unit Ms. Rowelyn Sargadillos. Their collective presence underscored the university’s unwavering support for the event and its goals. Dr. Roa further demonstrated MSUN’s commitment to the RAISE initiative by signing to Expression of Support, reinforcing the university’s dedication to fostering innovation and collaboration within the region. Moreover, the Food Category Product Pitching session featured exciting presentations, with Asst. Prof. Magoncia pitching his innovative flavored tilanggit, while Ms. Glaiza Orgino presented Chocolate Coconut Nougat from Incubatee Ms. Careen Joy E. Acut. Ms. Orgino’s pitch earned 1st place, further elevating the product’s recognition. In addition, the Chocolate Coconut Nougat was also awarded Best Food Souvenir during the National Tourism Week of Misamis Oriental 2024. Implemented by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), DOST Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, and Northern Mindanao Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, the summit aims to nurture a thriving innovation ecosystem where groundbreaking ideas can flourish, paving the way for long-term economic growth and food security in the region.

To celebrate students’ scholastic achievements for the quarter, Mindanao State University at Naawan – Integrated Developmental School (MSUN-IDS) held its Junior and Senior High School Recognition Program on the morning of Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at the MSUN-IDS Covered Court. Students from Grades 7 to 12 were recognized for their academic excellence with awards presented during the ceremony. Dr. Emmylou A. Emperador, Dean of the College of Education and Social Sciences, extended her heartfelt congratulations to both the students and their parents for their outstanding achievements. She also expressed her hopes for continued success in the future. Following the awards presentation, the much-anticipated English Festival began, with the Character Portrayal Contest marking the start of the event. With the theme, “English as a Global Language: Bridging Cultures, Connecting the World,” students from each year level brought to life various characters from classic literary works, including Pride and Prejudice and Hamlet. In the afternoon, the Literary Translation Challenge took place, where contestants translated an English story into Bisaya. This was followed by the Philippine Song Anthology Contest, showcasing students’ talent in both performance and cultural appreciation. The event concluded with an exciting series of games, including Word Jumble, Pictionary, Pinoy Henyo, and Crossword Puzzle, engaging participants in a fun and interactive way. Assoc. Prof. Jan Cleo D. Canoy delivered closing remarks, expressing his gratitude to the students, organizers, and everyone involved, emphasizing that their collective effort was key to the event’s success. The English Festival served as a platform for students to demonstrate their language skills while fostering an appreciation for the role of English in bridging cultures and connecting the world.

With discussions on medical and clothing allowances, human resource-related topics, and general faculty information, the employees of Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN) gathered at the MSUN Function House on January 17, 2025. In the morning, Ms. Nelvie Juezan, Director for Finance, discussed the Guidelines on the Grant of Medical Allowance, with Campus Infirmary Medical Officer Dr. Deanna Pauleen G. Valdez providing an overview of the Health Maintenance Organization (HMO). Following this, Ms. Juezan presented the Guidelines on the MSUN employees’ uniform and the grant of uniform/clothing allowance for the fiscal year 2025. The discussion was based on Civil Service Commission Memorandum Circular No. 16, s. 2024. Employees also participated in a vote to decide on the Filipiniana-inspired uniform, assisted by members of the University Uniform Committee. After that, Human Resource Management Officer Ms. Columba R. Dadole talked about Recruitment, Hiring, and Retirement. In the afternoon, the General Faculty meeting began with Assoc. Prof. Sylvia C. Labial’s lecture on Ethical Standards for Teachers, followed by Assoc. Prof. Juvy Arjona, who expanded on ethics and morality. Next, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Asst. Prof. Gergie A. Ambato discussed Faculty Roles, Responsibilities, and Development Programs. Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Services Ms. Arleen B. Uy addressed Individual, Organization, and Agency Performance Commitment and Review. Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan, Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Global Engagement, then spoke on Research, Extension, and Innovation. Moreover, employees were also able to ask questions and clarify some concerns to the resource persons. “Try to have a minute of reflection. On January 15, 2025, Mindanao State University at Naawan hosted representatives from the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), led by Mr. Sylvester C. Sales, Development Management Officer of MinDA, and Dr. Evelyn B. Taboada, consultant for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The meeting was convened to conceptualize a proposal for the UNIDO Adaptation Fund, fostering collaboration to address critical environmental and developmental challenges. Leading the discussions were MSU at Naawan officials, including Chancellor Dr. Elnor C. Roa, Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Global Engagement Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan, Director for the Research and Innovation Institute Dr. Anabelle Dece A. Espadero, and CAFES faculty members Mr. Christian Fel Batoctoy and Ms. Jolibe B. Llido. The dialogue centered on aligning local priorities with global objectives, emphasizing climate change mitigation and adaptation, nature-based solutions, and food security. Participants explored innovative strategies to support vulnerable communities in Region 10, promote resource conservation, and enhance regional sustainability. This collaboration highlights MSU at Naawan’s commitment to leveraging partnerships to drive research and innovation for sustainable development, resource efficiency, and environmental stewardship in the region.
