𝐂𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐮𝐦; 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝

In collaboration with Shinawatra University, Thailand, the College of Education and Social Sciences (CESS) conducted a research colloquium for academic year 2023-2024 on June 5, 2024 at the Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN) Function House. The event was anchored on the theme: “Fostering Research Education Towards a Sustainable Future,” which aligns with the fourth United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UN-SDG): Quality Education. Dr. Emmylou A. Emperador, dean of the college, formally welcomed the attendees and evaluators. This was followed by the Statement of Purpose given by Asst. Prof. Fernan Q. Abragan, Chairperson of the Department of Secondary and Elementary Education. Live via Zoom, the introduction of plenary speaker was initiated by the Director of International Affairs of Shinawatra University, Dr. Pratikshya Bhandari.  The plenary speaker, Dr. Thanakorn Thanathanchuchot shared a virtual in-depth lecture titled, “How to write a research article for International Journal.” A question and answer session, then, followed. Furthermore, this year’s esteemed evaluators are Dr. Trilbe Lizann E. Vasquez, Dr. Ruby C. Gonzales, and Dr. Ada Apalla-Rivas, faculty members from the College of Marine and Allied Sciences and CESS, respectively. Among the nine (9) presenters from the Bachelor of Secondary Education majors in English, Mathematics, and Sciences, who shared their research studies on various topics, these are the winners: 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗢𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 – 𝘼𝙣𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙯𝙖 𝘿. 𝐌𝐒𝐔𝐍-𝐂𝐌𝐀𝐒 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐒𝐁𝐏’𝐬 𝐈𝐒𝐀𝐌

Together with various taxonomists and systematic biologists from different parts of the Philippines and Asia, Mindanao State University at Naawan – College of Marine and Allied Sciences (MSUN-CMAS) faculty member Dr. Nonillon M. Aspe and student Ms. Kyrene Angel S. Magsayo attended and presented in the recently concluded International Symposium and 41st Annual Meeting (ISAM) organized by the Association of Systematic Biologists of the Philippines (ASBP). With the theme, “Frontiers in Systematics: Innovations and Emerging Technologies in Exploring Biodiversity”, the symposium took place at Northwestern University, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte from May 29-31, 2024.  Dr. Aspe presented their study titled, “Utilizing eDNA Metabarcoding for Assessing Mangrove-Associated Fish Biodiversity in Select Bioregions of the Philippines”. This is a collaborative output of the eDNA metabarcoding project headed by Dr. Venus E. Leopardas and funded by the Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD). Together with Dr. Aspe as her thesis adviser, Ms. Magsayo, a 4th-year Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology student, presented their research study titled, “Taxonomy of Sipuncula in Selected Site in Murcielagos Bay, Northern Mindanao, Philippines”.  This event facilitated discussions among scientists, taxonomists, and researchers from various universities in the Philippines and other countries, fostering the exchange of ideas and advancements in biodiversity exploration.

𝐍𝐎𝐌𝐂𝐀𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐃 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐌𝐒𝐔𝐍 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬

To discuss opportunities for collaboration, the Northern Mindanao Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (NOMCAARRD) paid a courtesy visit to the Mindanao State University at Naawan (MSUN) on April 24, 2024. The delegation, led by Dr. Maria Estela B. Detalla, Consortium Director, included Prof. Sheila C. Poonon, R&D Cluster Coordinator; Dr. Agnes S. Riñon, Technology Transfer Coordinator; Dr. Lucerne M. Razalo, Science Communication Cluster Coordinator; Prof. Rinante M. Buntod, ICT Cluster Coordinator; and Ms. Hiedy S. Cañete, Science Research Assistant. They received a warm welcome from Asst. Prof. Gergie A. Ambato, Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs and current Officer-in-Charge, as well as attendees from the MSUN-Extension Division led by Director Assoc. Prof. Mariefe B. Quiñones, University Extension Specialist Mr. Harry Kenn T. Dela Rosa, and Extension Division Secretary Asst. Prof. Russel D. Bañoc. During the visit, Dr. Detalla expressed their utmost gratitude to MSUN for being one of the strongest collaborative supporters among several universities and government agencies. The primary objectives of the visit were to express appreciation for the existing partnership and to explore other potential areas of collaboration. During the discussion, NOMCAARRD also sought support for upcoming events in collaboration with other agencies. Furthermore, NOMCAARRD has established a collaborative partnership with MSUN in several programs and initiatives and by serving as one of the funding agencies and evaluators for the university’s research and extension projects.
