Last September 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Can Tho University, Vietnam, and Mindanao State University at Naawan, paving the way for a student exchange program. As a result, MSUN welcomed seven students from Can Tho University on December 9, 2024.
As one of the first batches of international students hosted by MSU at Naawan following its accreditation by the Bureau of Immigration to accept foreign students, the Vietnamese students were greeted warmly by the university’s staff, faculty, and students. This enthusiastic welcome set the tone for a transformative experience.
The program officially began with an orientation session, where exchange students were introduced to the university’s mission and values. A campus tour followed, showcasing the Institute of Fisheries Research and Development. A courtesy call with the Chancellor Dr. Elnor C. Roa provided a formal yet welcoming start to their academic immersion.
A major program highlight was the inclusion of English classes designed to improve communication skills. These sessions emphasized that language should never be a barrier to acquiring knowledge. The lively interactions in these classes fostered meaningful connections between the students and the university community.
Academically, the program provided hands-on experience with cutting-edge research projects. Students delved into the eDNA Metabarcoding Project, combining classroom instruction with laboratory and fieldwork. They also visited the Center for Aquaculture Research, Enterprise, and Services, where they learned about advanced aquaculture technologies. Field activities included broodstock collection, allowing students to engage directly with locals and appreciate the scenic landscapes of Northern Mindanao.
Marine science was another focal point of the program. Students visited the Sea Cucumber R&D Center and participated in the MYTELLA Project, which highlighted sustainable marine practices. They also explored innovative global solutions through the Fruit Waste Project.
Moreover, the itinerary balanced academics with leisure and cultural exploration. At Tubajon Aquamarine Park, students enjoyed swimming, kayaking, and boat rides, fostering camaraderie and appreciation for the local environment. Meanwhile,the GROW Talabaan Project introduced them to community-driven scientific initiatives, such as water quality assessments and cultural immersion with Naawan’s indigenous ethnic group. An excursion to Initao’s Lasang Secret Adventure Park showcased the natural beauty of the region.
Cultural immersion activities added depth to the experience. The students participated in Filipino Christmas celebrations, both in community and family settings, leaving a lasting impression on their hearts.
As the program drew to a close, students engaged in the Giant Freshwater Prawn Technology (GiFPT) Project and visited one of the majestic waterfalls of Iligan City, Tinago Falls. The program concluded with a cultural presentation and the Exit Conference, where participants reflected on their experiences and celebrated newfound friendships.
The culmination of the exchange program featured a special event at the Research Conference Room, where participants from MSU at Naawan and Can Tho University came together to share their cultural and academic insights. The program included messages from MSUN officials, Vice Chancellors Prof. Gergie A. Ambato and Prof. Arleen B. Uy, as well as a heartfelt message from Ms. Duong Doan Trang, representing Can Tho University. Cultural performances by the Indak Kalaunan Performing Arts, Koro Kaayad Kaligaon Chorale, and MSN-IDS Tremolo Rondalla as well as from our exchange students.
Furthermore, MSUN Vice Chancellors emphasized a poignant takeaway from the program: “These exchange students have become the adopted sons and daughters of Mindanao State University at Naawan. If they return to the Philippines, they will always have a home here at the university.”
The event concluded with the awarding of certificates and tokens, with closing remarks from Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan, Director of the Office of International Affairs and Linkages. A photo opportunity captured the memorable moments shared by participants, marking the end of a fruitful exchange program.
The Exchange Student Program at MSU at Naawan not only emphasized academic excellence but also fostered cultural understanding and collaboration. For the Vietnamese students, it became an unforgettable chapter of growth, discovery, and meaningful exchange, highlighting the value of international partnerships in education.
