On September 25-26, 2023, a graduate of Hamilton College – New York, Class of 2021 and an intern of SEAFDEC/AQD in Tigbauan, Iloilo, Jonathan Dong, visited Mindanao State University at Naawan, as part of his global research endeavor. Dong is currently conducting his fellowship awarded by Hamilton College – Bristol Fellowship program, providing him with the opportunity to explore the global rise in sustainable aquaculture.Dong’s visit to MSU at Naawan was aimed at learning more about the goals of the university and to develop a docu-series detailing the incredible work that governments, private organizations, and people are doing to expand aquaculture in their respective regions. He also planned to dismiss any misconceptions of Mindanao, as well as providing insight on the work MSU at Naawan to positively expand the livelihoods of the people living in this region.The School of Marine Fisheries and Technology and the Research Division gladly initiated the tour to the university’s aquaculture and research facilities. On September 22, 2023, an Evaluation of the Campus Land Use Development and Infrastructure Plan (LUDIP) of MSU at Naawan was conducted by the members of the CHEDRO Technical Working Group from the agencies identified in CHED Administrative Order 1, Series of 2022.The Evaluation Committee headed by Dr. Zohrahaydah M. Panawidan, OIC – Chief Education Program Specialist from CHED XII, evaluated MSU at Naawan’s LUDIP based on the parameters that have been identified pursuant to the requirements of RA 11396 and its IRR, and the Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP).Evaluators commended MSUN for being the 1st among all MSU campuses to craft its LUDIP. They also acknowledged MSU at Naawan’s LUDIP TWG, headed by its chairperson, Dr. Flordeline A. Cadelina, for its comprehensive preparation of the said plan despite the late formulation of the evaluation and monitoring tool. On August 22, 2023, Lancaster Technology and Development Philippines, Inc. In pursuit of the university’s internationalization efforts, and in complying with the standards set thereof by the Bureau of Immigration, the accrediting agency, different MSU-Naawan campus offices work collaboratively to ensure the critical importance of complying with all regulatory requirements to safeguard the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors.Thus, on August 18, 2023, Friday, the Municipal Sanitary Inspector of LGU – Naawan Ms. April Rose Waga, and the Provincial Sanitary Inspector led by Sanitary Engineer Jacklyn Lim, conducted a campus-wide sanitary inspection of all buildings, laboratories, and other campus facilities, including the solid waste disposal facility.The inspection was carried out per local health regulations and guidelines, focusing on identifying potential health hazards and recommending corrective measures to maintain a healthy and conducive environment for the students, staff, and visitors. The inspection covered various aspects of the campus, including but not limited to:1) Sanitation Facilities: The availability, cleanliness, and maintenance of toilets, washrooms, and waste disposal units were thoroughly examined.2) Food Handling and Preparation Areas: Campus canteens, cafeterias, and food storage areas were inspected to ensure proper food handling practices and hygiene standards.3) Dormitories and Living Quarters: The cleanliness and sanitation of dormitory rooms and living quarters were assessed to ensure a healthy living environment for the students.4) Common Areas: Classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and other shared spaces were examined to ensure cleanliness and proper waste management.5) Water Supply and Quality: The campus water supply system was inspected to ensure the availability of safe and potable water.6) Vector Control: Measures taken to prevent and control the presence of disease-carrying vectors such as mosquitoes and rodents were evaluated.7) General Environment: Overall campus grounds, landscaping, and outdoor areas were assessed for cleanliness and proper maintenance.The said inspection yielded a positive outcome for the campus and its administrations, as the campus sanitary inspection conducted by the municipal and provincial sanitary inspectors concluded that MSU – Naawan is generally maintaining satisfactory standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and safety, thus, successfully passed the general checklist in obtaining a municipal sanitary permit.However, to ensure the continuous compliance of the campus, the administration is encouraged to implement the recommended measures to address the identified areas for improvement. On August 17, 2023, MSU-Naawan and MSU-Buug agreed to collaborate on a research project, through a Memorandum of Agreement, in support to the aquaculture sector, to increase the production and intensify initiatives on aquaculture for food security and for income generation of fish farmers.The project, “Utilization of Fruit Processing Waste as a source of prebiotics and immunostimulants for the development of healthy and improved aquaculture feeds”, is a research project funded by DOST-PCAARRD.With the MOA, MSU-Naawan will act as the project lead implementer, represented by Dr. Fiona L. Pedroso, a faculty member from the School of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. The College of Marine and Allied Sciences (CMAS) in collaboration with the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Environmental Sciences (CAFES), conducted a Focal Group Discussion (FGD) about Solid Waste Segregation on August 15, 2023, at the Audio Visual Room of the Extension Division. Happening now is the 36th AACCUP Annual National Conference and General Assembly 2023 held at the Century Park Hotel, Malate, Manila. The theme of this year’s conference is, “Strengthening a Culture of Quality Assurance in Higher Education through Partnership in Accreditation”. The conference will run from March 27-29, 2023.In attendance to the conference from MSU at Naawan are Dr. Rey Y. Capangapangan, Director for International Affairs and Linkages; and Asst. Prof. Heslie Ree P. Pontillo, Director for Quality Assurance and Management System.The conference started with a message from the Executive Director of AACCUP, Dr. Mirabel E. Ho, emphasizing the event’s Statement of Purpose which states “From Internalize to Institutionalize to Internationalize”.The Keynote Speaker of the conference is Atty. Cinderella Filipina Benitez-Jaro, Executive Director of Commission on Higher Education and the Acting Director of the Office of the Institutional Quality Assurance and Governance (OIQAG).

A Collaborative Research Agreement (CRA) is forged today by Mindanao State University at Naawan and the Faculty of Science of Hokkaido University, an organization of the faculty members of Hokkaido University at Sapporo City, Hokkaido, Japan.The CRA is for the research study of Mr. Jamael C. Abato, a faculty member of Biology Department, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at MSU Marawi who’s a doctoral student in the Department of Natural History, Graduate School of Science at Hokkaido University. Mr. Abato is currently conducting his study on “Systematics and taxonomy of intertidal ribbon worms (Phylum Nemertea) from the Philippines”.Dr. Nonillon M. Aspe, a faculty member of the Department of Marine Biology of the College of Marine and Allied Sciences of MSU at Naawan will collaborate on the said study and agreed to be involved in the ribbon worm collection in Initao, Pampangon, and Medina, Misamis Oriental, Philippines and its morphological examination in the laboratory.

Mindanao State University at Naawan together with the Local Government Unit of Balingasag (LGU Balingasag), the Philippine Family Farmers Agriculture Fishery Forestry Cooperatives Federation (AgriCOOPh), the Minergy Power Corporation-Balingasag Power Station (Minergy), and Philippine Coast Guard-Coast Guard Sub-Station Balingasag (CGSS Balingasag) forged a Memorandum of Agreement on March 20, 2023 at the People’s Palace, Balingasag, Misamis Oriental. The agreement seeks to ensure the collaborative and mutually beneficial implementation of the Participatory Coastal Resources and Socio-Economic Assessment of Balingasag, Misamis Oriental. Each of the parties agreed to further the goals that would lead to the sustainable use and management of the coastal waters of Balingasag and its Mariculture Park. MSU at Naawan, specifically, will:1) Conduct primary and secondary data gathering and field work to analyze the current status of the coastal/fisheryresourcesincluding the Mariculture Park;2) Provide all equipment anent the Project at a minimum cost for maintenance;3) Analyze water parameters at a discounted rate; and4) Provide terminal report of the Project to the Special Technical Working Group (STWG) and LGU-Balingasag relative to the above-stated tasks, e.g. establishment of marine protected areas, enhancement of fishery, productivity and the management of the mariculture park.
